President Trump Tweets That Kneeling Cowboys’ Rise For National Anthem Represents ‘Big Progress’

President Donald Trump tweeted several messages Tuesday morning regarding the Dallas Cowboys’ decision to lock arms and kneel prior to the playing of the national anthem for Monday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.

“The booing at the NFL football game last night, when the entire Dallas team dropped to its knees, was loudest I have ever heard. Great anger,” Trump tweeted Tuesday morning. “But while Dallas dropped to its knees as a team, they ALL stood up for our National Anthem. Big progress being made — we love our country!”

On Monday evening, the entire Dallas Cowboys team took the field before the national anthem and collectively knelt in a moment of silence to protest police brutality against blacks. But after, the team all stood up for the national anthem.

Trump praised the new approach, but warned the league is still struggling to find a way to take a stand and respect many fans’ wishes of honoring the country.

“Ratings for NFL football are way down except before game starts, when people tune in to see whether or not our country will be disrespected,” Trump tweeted Tuesday.
More than 100 NFL players in various Sunday games chose to kneel during the anthem.

“Many people booed the players who kneeled yesterday (which was a small percentage of total). These are fans who demand respect for our Flag!” Trump tweeted Monday.

At a rally Friday evening, Trump called for the firing of any professional athlete who kneels during the song to protest racism.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell criticized Trump for his comments, and Trump responded by saying the league was trying to “justify” players’ poor behavior.
